What gave Enfield a bad clutch reputation was the 3 plate clutch (350cc bullet), people get along with the 4 plate, and the modern 5 plate seems to operate well, all be it still a very old design. At the moment there is only one aftermarket clutch on the market and the design is no better at all.

This is a cush drive clutch centre I have quite a few of them for different Enfield's, Samrat made centres for Indian Bullets to the origional Interceptor centres, the later being a bit odd as it looks like you can fit 6 plates on it. If your going to use an Enfield clutch then use the cush drive version.

There are various things we can do to improve the clutch further, 3 normal springs and 3 stronger springs will help.

After market friction plates have been said to give a better operation, I suspect they are Kevlar and have a better set of oil grooves cut in to them. The 5 plate clutches are the same as the 4 plate but with 5 slimmer plates.

Hitchcocks are now selling their new version of the gearbox outer cover, as when the clutch is in operation the outer cover flexes, which is not good in slow traffic. But before you go out and hand over a bundle of your hard earned cash you can get similar benefits from a little diy on your own cover.

If you take the cover off you will see the alloy bearing cover where the clutch rod goes through. The top fixing bolt can be replaced with this captive nut.

This has to be the right length, so you'll have to do some trial and error. Fit the nut in to the hole and put a blob of grease on the nut end, and loosely fix the cover and then remove it, the grease will let you know where to drill a hole in the outer cover.

Best use a counter sunk bolt for this as a normal bolt may well interfere with the neutral lever.

The upshot of this is it will now hold the outer cover more rigidly, no more flexing and you clutch should work better.
